According to the British newspaper The Mirror, football superstar Lionel Messi’s mansion on the Spanish island of Ibiza was vandalized by a climate action group. The property, valued at 11 million euros, was graffitied by the organization.
The group also publicized the incident on social media, posting photos from the scene as well as images of its members holding signs that read: “Save the Planet, Eliminate Inequality, Abolish Harmful Systems.”
In a statement, the organization explained its actions: “We marked Lionel Messi’s villa in Ibiza, which was built without legal authorization and purchased by him for 11 million euros. Meanwhile, in the Balearic Islands, deaths due to extreme weather conditions are rising, with heat being a direct cause. The carbon footprint of the richest 1% is equivalent to that of the poorest two-thirds of the world’s population combined. This continues because there is an implicit endorsement of a destructive economic model. To address the climate crisis, we must radically reform this system.”
As reported by the Daily Mirror, Messi, his wife Antonella, and their three children were staying at the villa during their holiday in Ibiza. Although Messi has not yet responded to the incident personally, it undoubtedly adds to his personal distress, especially coming off the back of helping the Argentine national team win the 2024 Copa America and while he is recovering from injury.
Messi is currently on vacation, while his club, Inter Miami, continues to lead the Eastern Conference of the 2024 Major League Soccer (MLS) season without him, sitting atop the table after 25 games. Messi’s exact return date remains unknown.
