The Times: Despite Allegations, Paqueta Expected to Play Majority of Season for West Ham

According to The Times, despite facing match-fixing allegations and potential suspension, Brazilian midfielder Lucas Paqueta is expected to be available for the majority of West Ham’s fixtures in the upcoming season.

The Hammers’ midfield enforcer is under investigation that could lead to a multi-year ban. He has been charged by the Football Association (FA) with four separate instances of match manipulation – allegedly receiving yellow cards deliberately in four Premier League games. Paqueta has publicly denied one of these charges. This is among the most serious cases in the history of England’s top-flight league involving betting-related offenses by players.

However, the 26-year-old is currently allowed to continue playing until the disciplinary process is completed. Insiders suggest this could stretch well into the new season or beyond.

The FA’s disciplinary code stipulates that match-fixing can result in bans ranging from six months to lifetime suspensions. In 2022, the FA imposed a ten-year ban on Kieran Isaac, then playing for non-league Stourbridge FC, for deliberately getting booked. Concurrently, he received an additional 18-month ban for other charges and a 12-month ban for failing to cooperate with the investigation.
