Verbruggen: I Often Save Penalties, Netherlands Ready for Shootout

On July 10th, in the semi-finals of the European Championship, the Netherlands is set to face England, with goalkeeper Verbruggen giving a pre-match interview to UEFA.

Talking about overcoming Turkey

Verbruggen: “In the last ten minutes of the game, it felt like we had six goalkeepers on the field! Weghorst cleared a deflection, Van der Veen made an excellent interception, Dumfries blocked Calhanoglu’s shot, Skov Olsen and De Vrij jointly blocked a shot…”

“Perhaps I’ve missed some details, but this is enough to demonstrate the unity of the Dutch team. Every time we make an interception or block, it’s like scoring a goal, that’s how determined we are.”

Talking about the differences between modern and traditional goalkeepers

Verbruggen: “Modern football requires goalkeepers to initiate attacks, and I feel very comfortable with this aspect. Goalkeepers must be involved in tactical offensive organization, you have to think about how to deal with the opponent’s pressing.”

“But don’t forget, my primary job is still saving shots, I will strive to excel at this. I hope to grow into an all-around goalkeeper, I’m always looking to improve.”

Talking about club teammates in the English squad

Verbruggen: “Dunk is in the English team, in addition to that, many of my Dutch teammates play in the Premier League, such as Ake, Van Dijk, and Gakpo, this might be an advantage. In any case, I don’t care where my opponents come from, I just want to win.”

Talking about the possibility of a penalty shootout

Verbruggen: “Of course, everyone wants to win within 90 minutes, but if it goes to a penalty shootout, we’ll be ready. Our coaching staff, analysts, and goalkeeping coach are all geared up.”

“I enjoy penalty shootouts, I’ve saved many penalties. If it comes down to that moment, I will confidently step up to the line, striving to play a decisive role for the team, doing everything I can.”
