In yesterday’s F1 Hungarian Grand Prix, Red Bull driver Verstappen complained about the team’s strategy over the Team Radio. In his post-race interview, he also expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s strategic execution.
Verstappen said, “When we were already lacking speed compared to McLaren, of course, I hoped that we would do the right thing strategically, but clearly not. The first pit stop, we got undercut, which was not ideal, but perhaps we could have recovered. Then for the second pit stop, they left me out there, and by then I was already in traffic. When the car isn’t the fastest, you need to try and make the most of the undercut opportunity; you can’t just rely on a small speed advantage.”
Furthermore, Verstappen complained, “Last year, the car might have been much faster than everyone else, but I think at our current position, we can’t afford to do that anymore. I think that’s why today’s race was tough for us. Obviously, it frustrates me because I want everything to be done well. Because I’m also realistic, today our pace wasn’t enough to beat McLaren, but if we had done better, third place should have been within reach.”
