According to Spanish media, Niely Jolo’s decision to bypass Real Madrid in favor of Manchester United has become the spark that ignited tensions between Real Madrid and Portuguese super agent Jorge Mendes.
Real Madrid had hoped Jolo would replace captain Nacho, who is set to move to Qatar, as their new central defender. The Lille center-back was wavering between Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain but was ultimately swayed by the significant financial package offered by Manchester United. Jolo’s transfer further demonstrated Mendes’ influence in the transfer market and his tendency to prioritize economic interests.
Real Madrid is unhappy with Mendes, feeling he places his own interests above those of his partners. Although Mendes brought players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Pepe, and Coentrao to Real Madrid over a decade ago, the relationship cooled following the departure of these Portuguese stars.
Besides the Jolo incident, tensions between Real Madrid and Mendes have surfaced in several other areas. One such issue involves Andriy Lunin, the Ukrainian goalkeeper who impressed during Thibaut Courtois’ injury absence but seems unwilling to extend his contract. While Real Madrid wishes to retain him, Mendes appears more inclined to facilitate Lunin’s departure.
There is also a disagreement over Paulo Iyago, a Real Madrid academy player also represented by Mendes. He ultimately chose to leave the Real Madrid youth system and join Sporting CP.
In contrast to Real Madrid, Barcelona currently enjoys a close relationship with Mendes. He represents several of Barcelona’s promising talents, including Gavi, Balde, Ansu Fati, and academy player Guillem Fernández. Additionally, Mendes represents Cancelo and Félix, both on loan at Barcelona, who wish to remain with the club.
Mendes wields considerable power in the transfer market, enabling him to help players achieve their goals. However, his strained relationship with Real Madrid may impact his dealings in the transfer market.
