On August 5, Bayer Leverkusen’s Wirtz gave an interview recently, during which he discussed the team’s setback at the European Championship.
Speaking about their exit from the European Championship, Wirtz said, “The result was very disappointing. We had a chance to go into a penalty shootout and also a chance to win. It took weeks to accept this outcome, but Spain ultimately won the match, which might have made it easier for us to accept.”
As last season’s Bundesliga champions, Bayer Leverkusen will be competing in the Champions League this season. Speaking about his first Champions League campaign, Wirtz said, “I haven’t thought much about the Champions League yet; I’m currently more focused on getting back into the game and looking forward to singing the Champions League anthem on the pitch.”
