In the fourth round of the Bundesliga, after Bayer Leverkusen narrowly won 4-3 against VfL Wolfsburg at home, Zaka harshly criticized the team’s defense, stating that top teams do not concede three goals within the first 45 minutes. Additionally, Zaka pointed out that the team’s offense cannot guarantee scoring more goals than their opponents every game.
Zaka believes that the 4-3 scoreline is a wake-up call, “We won, and that’s important, but we cannot be satisfied with our defense. We must remember this was a home game, and we defended so naively.”
Zaka further stated that the team’s offense cannot ensure scoring more goals than their opponents each match, “We conceded three goals against Leipzig, and another three against Wolfsburg. Although we scored four goals and won this game, we cannot expect to outscore our opponents every week—we are leaving too much space for them to attack.”
He then reiterated the issue with the team’s defense, “While people consider us a top team, no top team concedes three goals within 45 minutes. For a team of our caliber, this should not happen.”
Zaka also mentioned that Leverkusen’s championship last season relied entirely on solid defense, “Last season, we only conceded 24 goals, yet we have already conceded nine goals in just four rounds of this season. We cannot continue like this.”
Leverkusen defender Tah also acknowledged the defensive issues, “In any case, this serves as a warning for us.”
