On July 30th, in the third round of the women’s singles at the Paris Olympics, Zheng Qinwen came back to defeat American player Navarro 2-1, advancing to the quarterfinals. After the match, Zheng Qinwen told media that when playing for the country, she must give it her all and not think about unnecessary things.
Regarding the comeback against her opponent, Zheng Qinwen said, “Perhaps it was just a matter of holding on with that fighting spirit, and then gradually turning the score around. Looking back now, I have no idea what happened in the latter part of the second set. All I knew was that playing for China, I had to give it my all and couldn’t think about unnecessary things.”
“In the third set, I started to play more smoothly. I could also see that my opponent was out of energy, but I still held on with that fighting spirit. Actually, I was also somewhat exhausted. Today, my serving was in the best form yet. I think Navarro is an excellent opponent, very admirable, and she fought until the end as well.”
Regarding the post-match handshake and exchange:
During the post-match handshake, Navarro seemingly expressed dissatisfaction with Zheng Qinwen. According to Yahoo Sports, Navarro said, “I told her that I don’t respect her as a competitor. I think the way she handles things is quite ruthless, which doesn’t earn her many friendships in the locker room. So, facing such an opponent, I really won’t show respect.”
“However, I also want to congratulate her. She played some good tennis at the end and performed better than me, so congratulations to her.”
Zheng Qinwen responded, “She said she doesn’t understand why I have so many fans. It seems she is unhappy with some actions I took towards her. If she is dissatisfied with my behavior, she can tell me directly. I want to correct my mistakes and become a better player and a better person. I’m glad she told me this. I won’t consider it an attack because she lost the match.”
According to the schedule, Zheng Qinwen’s opponent in the quarterfinals will be German veteran Kerber, who defeated Fernandez 2-0 in the third round.
