On July 16th, Zhu Yi, the administrator of Transfermarkt, discussed Oscar’s contract situation on his personal Weibo account.
Zhu Yi stated, “Recently, I updated Oscar’s contract from the end of November to the end of December. This is because he signed a short-term one-month extension during the middle of this year. In my opinion, the main purpose of this renewal was for the AFC Champions League Elite League, as there is another round of matches in December that need to be played.”
“Oscar is now in the final year of his contract, and it is well known that due to China’s salary cap policy, the maximum salary for new contracts can only be €2 million. After current contracts exceeding this limit expire, any renewals can also only reach a maximum of €2 million. Therefore, the salary Oscar will receive in December must comply with the salary cap rules. I don’t know the exact amount, but it is clear that it cannot exceed one-twelfth of €2 million, which is €167,000.”
“Taking a closer look, from Oscar’s perspective, despite being over 30 years old, his current form and performance in the Chinese Super League can still secure him a larger contract. Even if European leagues do not choose him, there are wealthy leagues in West Asia, as well as leagues closer to his home in America. From his standpoint, he certainly would not choose to easily renew a contract with Port for only €2 million. After the original contract expires in November, it will not be within the transfer window of major leagues. Choosing to fulfill the contract to its end and earning hundreds of thousands of euros for just playing one AFC Champions League match is perfectly acceptable. Of course, from Port’s perspective, they would prefer that he is willing to accept a capped salary of €2 million in the second half of the year and renew his contract to stay. In other words, Oscar may only consider staying if he cannot get €2 million elsewhere.”
