New Regulations for MotoGP and Understanding Sprint Races

Jakarta – In the 2023 season of MotoGP, there are several new rules agreed upon by the Grand Prix Commission (GPC). These changes encompass technical aspects related to the sprint races, which now contribute to race points.

Officially, the 2023 MotoGP season is set to kick off soon, with the opening round taking place at the Portugal Grand Prix on March 26, 2023. The format this year sees a distinct shift, particularly in the sprint race format, which will be held on Saturday afternoons during each Grand Prix.

The regulations also address conditions for mid-race stops. If a rider fails to complete at least three laps, the race cannot continue, and no points are awarded. For those who reach more than three laps but less than half the total, they receive half points. Drivers receive full points if their performance exceeds 25% of the race distance. Qualifying procedures for Moto2 and Moto3 involve three practice sessions on Friday and Saturday determining Q1 and Q2 entrants.

In terms of technical rules:

– The maximum fuel capacity for MotoGP sprints is 12 liters, allowing teams to create specialized tanks for the event.
– Motor clearance will vary between 15mm and 35mm.
– Approved tank materials include steel or aluminum, but carbon fiber or glass fiber can be used with magnesium or aluminum to enhance rigidity, strength, and protection.
– Suppliers of race equipment, such as helmets, must adhere to new guidelines, and FIM certification must be displayed until the end of 2025.

Understanding MotoGP Sprint Races

– Short-distance MotoGP races take place every Saturday afternoon, preceding the Sunday main event at 3:00 PM local time. Track lengths are half that of regular races or within a 50% range.
– Points for sprint races are halved from regular events. A standard rider needs 25 points for a podium finish on Sunday, while only 12 points are needed for a sprint race podium.
– Sprint race point distribution:
– 1st: 12 points
– 2nd: 9 points
– 3rd: 7 points
– 4th: 6 points
– 5th: 5 points
– 6th: 4 points
– 7th: 3 points
– 8th: 2 points
– 9th: 1 point

It’s important to note that sprint race results do not determine the starting grid for Sunday’s race, and participation is free, with no need to consider grid positions for the sprint event.
