Jakarta – Aprilia Racing’s Aleix Espargaro admits that he cannot guarantee his presence in MotoGP beyond the 2024 season, revealing it due to his physical condition.
At 33 years old, age is certainly catching up, with Espargaro being the oldest rider in the sport. He has committed to defending Aprilia until 2024, which means he will turn 35 when his contract expires.
The most likely scenario is that 2024 could be his swansong. Espargaro is not eager to follow in the footsteps of MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi, who recently retired at 42.
“Currently, I don’t see myself racing in MotoGP after 2024. Valentino Rossi’s retirement at 42 was fantastic,” said Espargaro, according to Corsedimoto.
“But I don’t think I have the strength for it,” he continued.
Bodily fitness is a key consideration for Espargaro. Reports suggest that from next season, MotoGP will feature 42 races (including sprint events), while traditionally, a season consists of 21 races.
Espargaro made his MotoGP debut in 2019, but only managed two podium finishes in the following three years. However, his performance improved significantly in 2022, with one victory and four podium appearances.
