If Francesco Bagnaia Leaves, 2022 Moto3 Champion Could Become Ducati’s “Backup” For 2023

Jakarta – The Italian factory MotoGP team, Ducati, remains concerned about the continuity of their partnership with Francesco Bagnaia. With anticipation of his departure, they are targeting Iwan Gadea as a potential replacement.

Ducati Corse’s General Manager Luigi Dall’Igna has even expressed interest in Gadea. The young rider’s impressive performance with Gasgas Aspar in the 2022 Moto3 season makes him an attractive option. At just 18 years old, Gadea claimed the title with 319 points after 20 races, including seven victories and 12 podium finishes.

A successful Moto3 world champion elevated Gadea to the Moto2 category in 2023, set to partner with Jack Dixon next season.

“Iwan Gadea is a rider who can make a difference. He’s done some remarkable things,” Dall’Igna quoted from the paddock on Monday, December 26th.

Ducati currently has a contract with Bagnaia until 2024, but Dall’Igna admits concern that the 2022 MotoGP champion might leave after his deal expires. “In life, you never know. Perhaps Pecco (Bagnaia) will move on, and we have a two-year agreement that’s strong. We can support each other during tough times, but it’ll be challenging,” he says.

Despite their interest, securing Gadea may prove difficult as he is currently affiliated with KTM, riding for Gasgas Aspar. Other MotoGP teams are also reportedly interested in Gadea’s skills, so it remains to be seen which outfit swoops in first for his services.
