Jakarta – Marc Marquez remains focused on his own objectives and is not yet contemplating matching legendary MotoGP figurehead Valentino Rossi’s championship title record in the upcoming season.
With six MotoGP world titles under his belt, Marquez still has a significant gap to close with his arch-rival Rossi. The opportunity to potentially draw level could arise for Marquez after his move from Repsol Honda to Gresini Racing next season, but he insists he hasn’t given it much thought just yet.
“At the moment, I don’t aim to equal that record because I’m far from my current level. I can’t do it next season; I’ll try to win the championship,” Marquez said.
The last time Marquez tasted a world championship podium was in 2019. Since then, the title has been claimed by Joan Mir, Fabio Quartararo, and Francesco Bagnaia in the past two seasons.
In the last two seasons, injuries have hindered Marquez’s chances of catching up to Rossi, preventing him from achieving a victory. To regain confidence, Marquez acknowledges the need to rebuild after such a challenging period.
“I haven’t won a race in two years. With these stats, you can’t go into a season thinking, ‘I’m going to win the championship,’ ” he remarks.
Rossi has claimed seven championships with Honda and Yamaha, but despite numerous attempts, he fell short of an eighth title. Meanwhile, Marquez secured his six titles with Honda before ending his association with the Japanese factory at the end of the season.
