Beijing time May 14th, Chinese golfer Liu Yan delivered an outstanding performance at the 2024 U.S. Women’s Open Qualifying event held in New Jersey, securing her spot in the prestigious tournament with a final score of -11.
The U.S. Women’s Open Qualifier requires players to compete over 36 holes within one day, with stringent selection criteria. Fresh from the LPGA Founders Cup, Liu Yan had no time to rest before tackling the challenge of the major qualifier. After a grueling 36-hole battle, she finished fourth with a score of 133 (65-68), earning her place in the U.S. Women’s Open taking place from May 30th to June 2nd. This will mark Liu Yan’s eighth appearance in a LPGA major championship.
In recent years, Liu Yan has honed her skills on the LPGA Tour. At the start of the 2024 season, she finished tied for 15th at the Blue Bay Masters, and then showed great resilience at the Los Angeles Championship, ending up tied for 13th.
In 2014, the U.S. Women’s Open International Qualifying made its debut in China, with talented players like Shi Yuting and Liu Yiwei qualifying for the top stage. Liu Yan herself shone in the 2016 and 2017 qualification events held in China, winning titles and securing her spots. Although she didn’t advance in her previous attempts, Liu Yan, now more seasoned and resilient after numerous LPGA experiences, is set to make a different impact on this highly anticipated tournament.
The LPGA major event, the U.S. Women’s Open, will tee off at the Lancaster Country Club in Pennsylvania from May 30th to June 2nd, local time. With a total purse increased to $12 million, it becomes the richest women’s golf event in history.
Considered the “major of majors,” the U.S. Women’s Open, first held in 1946, is now in its 79th edition. It boasts the longest tradition, the most inclusive participation, the strongest field, and the highest prize money. Chinese world No. 1s Feng Shanshan and Yin Ruoqing have both left their mark on the course. This year’s tournament is sure to attract top golfers from around the globe – stay tuned!
