Hopes to claim the AIG Women’s Open title at St. Andrews

[3 June 2024, St. Andrews, Scotland] – American golfer Nelly Korda expresses that a win at the AIG Women’s Open in St. Andrews would be “extraordinary,” marking a remarkable season for her. This year holds the potential for historical moments for the 25-year-old, who has already had an impressive run.

From January to April, Korda dominated with consecutive victories in five tournaments, including her second career Grand Slam triumph at the Chevron Championship.

Becoming the LPGA Tour’s player with the most consecutive wins, tying Nancy Lopez and Annika Sorenstam, Korda continued her winning streak by capturing the recent Mizuho America Open, setting a stunning record of six victories in seven attempts.

predictions abound that Korda could potentially match or surpass Mickey Wright’s record of 13 wins in a single season, which she set in 1963. A victory in golf’s spiritual home this summer would make 2024 a pivotal year for her.

Korda has visited St. Andrews before but never played on the Old Course, now her focus is on securing another major title at the AIG Women’s Open from August 21-25. She eagerly anticipates the event, eager to make history on her home turf.

“Nailing a Grand Slam title is the pinnacle for any golfer,” Korda declares.

“Winning at St. Andrews, where golf has such a rich legacy, would be incredibly special. There’s no feeling quite like it!” she adds.

“I’m so excited to go there. I’ve never played on those greens. When I was starting out at Kingsbarns, I lived in St. Andrews. I’ve walked the 18th, crossed Swannie Bridge, but mostly as a tourist,” she reminisces.

“Every week I look forward to that. Competing in my sport’s birthplace would be amazing. With all the history at St. Andrews, it’s thrilling to think about playing on the Old Course.”

The AIG Women’s Open will stage its third edition at the Old Course, though Korda’s links golf experience is mainly elsewhere in Britain. However, she has adapted to the unique challenge, stating:

“As each year goes by, I gain more appreciation for it. Even if it’s just a few times a year, I love it. It’s so much fun and showcases the creative side of golf. You can bring different clubs and play under such diverse conditions,” she explains.

“It really brings out a different side of me as a competitor,” she adds.

Korda’s dominance has not dampened spirits among her fellow players; instead, it has invigorated interest in the sport and inspired continuous improvement. Fellow English golfer Georgia Hall is energized by the prospect of facing Korda soon.

Hall, who won at Royal Lytham & St. Annes in 2018, feels a surge of motivation to compete. “I don’t know what the next six months hold, but going head-to-head with her, it’d be a ‘wow’ moment for me. I really want to come out on top,” she shared.

AIG Women’s Open, known for its unmatched competition on and off the course, will take place at the historic Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland, from August 21-25, 2024.
