In the qualifying session of the Las Vegas F1 Grand Prix, a confrontation erupted between Red Bull’s Verstappen and Alpine’s Ocon on the track. Both drivers clashed over track positions during their fast laps, with accusations of reckless driving flying in team radio exchanges.
Reflecting on the incident post-race, Verstappen told reporters that Ocon had foolishly tried to overtake him, saying, “He thinks he’s clever, but I’ll take him out at Turn 1 if he tries it again.” This comment hints at lingering tensions from their 2018 Brazilian GP encounter, suggesting the issue may persist for some time.
“Everyone was spacing out for their flying laps,” Verstappen recounted, “But Ocon came barging through like an idiot, almost hitting me at Turn 14. I kept my distance, but he tried to mess up my final lap – and then he went ahead with his own.”
His frustration was evident when he added, “Well, if he wants to play games, I’ll play them too. And obviously, that plan worked.”
