On June 13, Beijing time, the second round of the WTA 250 ‘s-Hertogenbosch tournament continued, with fifth-ranked women’s singles player Pegula, returning from injury this week, losing unexpectedly to world No. 400 Krunic, 6-7(3)/7-6(3)/4-6, ending her bid for the quarterfinals.
Pegula
After representing the United States in the Billie Jean King Cup in April, Pegula had been sidelined until she planned to return at Roland Garros. However, her recovery didn’t progress as hoped, delaying her comeback until the grass court season. In this match, Pegula displayed a competitive level, breaking first in both sets, but her performance on crucial points and in tiebreaks was not up to par, perhaps due to her lack of match play.
After splitting the tiebreak sets, the match entered a decisive third set. Both players had break point opportunities in the opening four games, but Pegula failed to capitalize, while Krunic converted from a 40-15 deficit. Despite staying close in the latter stages, Pegula was unable to mount a successful comeback, thus missing out on the quarterfinals.
In the concurrent ATP 250 event, fourth seed Khachanov also fell to Kukic, eliminating him from the quarterfinals.
