Chinese player Wang Xinyu defeated “familiar foe” Tomljanovic in three sets in the first round of the 2024 Wimbledon women’s singles, advancing past the first round for the second consecutive year.
Reflecting on the match, Wang said after the game, “This is the third time playing against her this year, and each time it’s a tough three-set battle. The key was that I served well, which reduced the pressure on my receiving game, allowing me to play more freely. Breaking her serve right at the start of the third set helped me relax and play better.”
Wang’s next opponent is fifth seed Pegula. Looking ahead to the match, she commented, “She just won a title in Berlin, so her style is definitely suited to grass. I don’t have any mental baggage; all I can do is give my best and enjoy the match.”
Wang will return to clay after Wimbledon, representing China at the Paris Olympics. She highlighted the special significance of the Olympics for Chinese players: “I believe participating in the Olympics is very special for athletes from every country, perhaps even more so for Chinese players. When we were young, talking about dreams, options like doctors, teachers, and Olympic athletes would come up. I think taking part in the Olympics is a unique experience, and I’m really looking forward to it.”
Wang will compete in both singles and doubles at the Olympics, partnering with compatriot Zheng Saisai. The pair had impressive performances during the clay season and recently clinched the women’s doubles title at the Berlin tournament.
“We complement each other well, and the team atmosphere is very relaxed. We played well in Madrid and Rome, and winning on grass was a bit unexpected. I’m eagerly anticipating returning to Paris. Now, I prefer clay over grass because I’ve won more matches on clay, which gives me more confidence, and I’ve found more techniques. As time goes by, I have more tools in my arsenal.”
