On July 6th, local time, during the third round of the 2024 Wimbledon Women’s Singles, Wang Xinyu staged a comeback to defeat Dart with scores of 2-6, 7-5, and 6-3, making her first appearance in the tournament’s last 16 and her second appearance in the fourth round of a Grand Slam singles event!
The pair had previously met once, at the 2022 WTA 250 Melbourne qualifying event, where Dart won 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. Today, Dart started strong, securing an early break for a 3-1 lead. The match was then interrupted by rain. Upon resumption, while Wang immediately broke back, her service game was inconsistent, allowing Dart to secure consecutive breaks and close out the first set 6-2.
In the second set, the competition intensified, with both players battling for every point. Wang stepped up when it mattered most, breaking and holding serve to level the match at 7-5. Entering the decisive third set, Wang rallied from a 0-3 deficit, holding her opponent to a bagel and sealing victory 6-3. With this win, she advanced to the round of 16, where she will face either Jabeur or Svitolina.
In doubles action, Raducanu withdrew from the mixed doubles with Murray, resulting in Zhang Shuai and Arevalo’s first-round opponents changing to the American duo Volynets and Ram. Prior to her mixed doubles match, Zhang played in the women’s doubles second round, partnering with Kaori Kato but losing 1-6, 4-6 to Kenin and Mattek-Sands, ending their campaign in the round of 32.
