On July 1st, local time, in the first round of the 2024 Men’s Singles at Wimbledon, China’s top player, Zhang Zhizhen, dominated French qualifier Juvet, winning 7-6(4), 6-3, 6-2 to advance confidently to the second round.
This year’s Wimbledon marks Zhang’s first appearance as a seeded player in a Grand Slam event. As the tournament’s 32nd seed, he faced Juvet, who had advanced from the qualifiers. In the opening set, both players held their serves before entering a tiebreak, where Zhang seized his opportunity with a 7-4 scoreline. In the second set, after leading 4-1, Zhang momentarily lost focus, allowing Juvet to close the gap to 4-3. However, he promptly regained composure and won two consecutive games, securing the set 6-3. In the third set, Zhang battled back from 0-40 down to secure an early break, leaving Juvet with no chance for a comeback. Ultimately, Zhang triumphed over his opponent 7-6(4), 6-3, 6-2, achieving his maiden victory in the main draw of Wimbledon. He will next face German player Struff in the second round.
In other first-round Women’s Singles matches, Chinese veteran Zhang Shuai, playing with a protected ranking, lost to the 14th seed Kasatkina 3-6, 0-6, failing to progress. Another Chinese player, Yuan Yue, also bowed out in her opening match, losing to Ruus 2-6, 3-6.
