On July 1st in local time, the 2024 Wimbledon Championships concluded its opening day of main draw action with four out of nine Chinese players advancing. Zhu Lin swept Begu to secure her first Wimbledon win in three years, giving Team China a winning start at this year’s tournament. She will face Pavlyuchenkova in the second round. Shang Juncheng defeated former quarterfinalist Garin for his first main draw victory at Wimbledon, becoming the first mainland Chinese male player to win a main draw match at the All England Club. He will next take on 10th seed Dimitrov.

Zhang Zhizhen, playing as a seeded player for the first time in a Grand Slam, defeated a qualifier, Jarry, for his maiden main draw victory at Wimbledon and completed his set of wins at all four majors. He will meet Struff in the second round. Wang Yafan overcame Schmiedlova for her first main draw win at Wimbledon in five years, advancing to the second round where she will face American star Keys. Eighth seed Zheng Qinwen was upset, exiting in the first round for the second consecutive year. Zhang Shuai, Wang Qiang, Yuan Yue, and Wang Xiyu were unable to progress.

In the men’s singles, top seeds Shintaro Mochizuki, Carlos Alcaraz, Medvedev, and Ruud advanced to Round 2. Mochizuki will face former finalist Berrettini in a highly anticipated clash, while Wawrinka will meet Monfils in the next round. In women’s singles, second seed Coco Gauff, four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, and hometown favorite Emma Raducanu were among the notable names moving into Round 2. French Open semifinalist M. Andreeva bowed out in the first round, while Sabalenka and Azarenka withdrew due to shoulder injuries before their matches.
