On July 13 local time, at the women’s singles final of the 2024 Wimbledon Tennis Championship, No. 31 seed Barbora Krejcikova defeated No. 7 seed Camila Paolini 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to win her first Wimbledon title. This is her second Grand Slam singles title in her career and she becomes the fourth Czech player to win the Wimbledon women’s singles title in the Open Era!
The two players had met once before in the first round of the 2018 Australian Open qualifying rounds, where Krejcikova won 6-2, 6-1. In today’s match, Krejcikova quickly got into her rhythm, using a variety of tactics to force Paolini into errors. The Czech star broke serve repeatedly to take a 5-2 lead. Serving for the set, Krejcikova held her serve without dropping a point, winning the set 6-2.
In the second set, Paolini was not affected by her loss in the first set, promptly adjusting her state. She ran hard to create scoring opportunities for herself. The Italian relied on two break-point opportunities to level the match with a 6-2 set victory. In the deciding set, after both players were tied at 3-3, Paolini’s serve became erratic. Krejcikova seized the opportunity to break serve, securing a 5-3 lead with a hold and a break. Serving for the match, Krejcikova saved two break points to hold serve and sealed the deal with a 6-4 scoreline, defeating Paolini 2-1 overall to clinch the title.
