In the men’s singles final of Wimbledon 2024, Rolex ambassador Carlos Alcaraz, the 21-year-old Spanish prodigy, showcased extraordinary prowess and mental fortitude, successfully defending his championship title.

At the start of the match, Alcaraz was in full swing, winning the first two sets with scores of 6-2, 6-2, firmly controlling the pace of the game. However, in the crucial third set, while leading with a 40-0 advantage in the service game to win the match, Alcaraz faced severe challenges. Nevertheless, he calmly handled the situation and, after intense fighting, won the third set 7-6 (4), defeating seven-time champion and 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic in straight sets.

This young talent, through exceptional performance, became the sixth male player in the Open Era to win consecutive French Open and Wimbledon titles in the same year, following in the footsteps of three Rolex ambassadors—Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg, Roger Federer—and legends Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Additionally, he is the second player in the Open Era to win all four of his first Grand Slam finals, an astonishing win rate that was last achieved by another Rolex ambassador, Roger Federer.

In the award ceremony, Alcaraz showed humility: “To be honest, winning this trophy was my dream. When I was 11, I was interviewed, and then I said that my dream was to win Wimbledon. Now I am realizing my dream and want to keep moving forward. Obviously, it feels great to play on this beautiful court, let alone lifting this amazing trophy! For me, this is the most spectacular event, the most charming court, and the most beautiful trophy.”

Regarding back-to-back victories at the French Open and Wimbledon, Alcaraz commented: “I always strive hard and believe that I can win. It means a lot to me to be among the players who have achieved this in the same year. Those great champions did it before, and I don’t think I’m on par with them yet; I will continue to forge my own path and journey. This is a significant moment in my career.”

As for Djokovic, despite less than ideal performances in the first two sets, his fighting spirit displayed in the third set was commendable. After all, the 37-year-old had just undergone knee surgery early last month, and securing the runner-up position was no small feat. Post-match, besides lavishing praise on Alcaraz’s outstanding performance, Djokovic expressed heartfelt gratitude to his family: “Thank you to my wife, I love you, for your support. And to my lovely children, thank you for bringing laughter to me every day. Whenever I see you during the award ceremony, I get teary-eyed. I’m grateful to be the father of these two little angels, and they are starting to love tennis more and more. I don’t know if I have the courage to continue coaching, there are many wonderful things in life, but if you really want to continue, I will be by your side.”

The Wimbledon men’s singles final concluded with the Duchess of Cambridge personally presenting awards to the champion and runner-up, bringing the extraordinary match to a perfect close. Alcaraz’s successful defense of his title undeniably showcased a rising star’s brilliance in the world of tennis, with his future filled with infinite possibilities. Let us look forward to him forging even more glory!

Krejcikova Claims Her First Wimbledon Title

The women’s singles final, which ended the previous day, was a rollercoaster ride. Czech player Barbora Krejcikova defeated Italian qualifier Martina Trevisan 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, winning her second Grand Slam singles title at Wimbledon this year, following her triumph at the 2021 French Open! Notably, both victories came on natural surfaces. Krejcikova earned 2,000 points and a £2.7 million champion’s prize, propelling her singles ranking back into the top ten.

In her acceptance speech, Krejcikova spoke emotionally about her late mentor Jana Novotna, who passed away from cancer in 2017: “When I transitioned from juniors to seniors, I once felt lost, and Jana told me to believe in myself and helped me find direction. Before she passed away, she told me to chase my dreams bravely and to win Grand Slam titles! I accomplished that at the 2021 French Open, but I never thought I would lift the same trophy here like Jana did in 1998!”

Novotna is a Czech tennis legend who narrowly missed out on Wimbledon titles in 1993 and 1997. In 1998, she reached the Wimbledon final for the third time and finally fulfilled her dream. Twenty-six years later, in the 2024 Wimbledon, her disciple Krejcikova lifted the Rosewater Dish on the same court, evoking countless emotions!

Runner-up Trevisan stated: “Today, I feel a bit down, but I’ll try to keep smiling. I must remember that today is still a beautiful day, and I participated in the Wimbledon final. When I was a child, I watched the finals on TV, cheering for Federer.” With consecutive runner-up finishes at the French Open and Wimbledon, Trevisan’s world ranking rose to fifth.
