On July 10th, local time, Australia’s top player, Alex de Minaur, announced his withdrawal from the quarterfinal singles match against Novak Djokovic. In his statement, De Minaur wrote, “Obviously, this is not the news I hoped to share with you all. Unfortunately, due to my hip injury, I have had to make the decision to withdraw. I have a small tear in my fibrocartilage, which is located at the end of the adductor or connected to it. During the last three points of my match against Fisseaux, I felt a severe tear in my hip. Yesterday, I underwent scans that confirmed my suspicions. If I were to play another match, I would be at significant risk of worsening the injury.”

Following the announcement of his withdrawal, De Minaur held a press conference on the same day to further explain his injury situation and the reasons for his withdrawal.

“This is incredibly frustrating, there’s no sugarcoating it,” said De Minaur. “I was making a forehand shot while sliding, which created a lot of pressure, and I felt it (the hip tear) happen. I knew right away it wasn’t going to be good. I believe this injury was a one-off event because it was caused by excessive stress on the body during a slide on grass, especially since it was match point, so I pushed myself harder than usual, maybe putting more strain on it than normal.”

“Without a doubt, this was the most important match of my career at this stage,” De Minaur noted. “If I could have played today, I would have done anything. I knew about the scan results yesterday, but I still held out hope that some miracle would happen when I woke up this morning. If I had insisted on playing today, the recovery time for this injury might have extended from three to six weeks to four months. That would have been too big a risk.”

Novak Djokovic advances to the semifinals without a fight due to De Minaur’s withdrawal. He will await the winner between Fritz and Musetti in the semi-finals.
