Gold Medal! Women’s Singles Tennis Final: Zheng Qinwen Defeats Vikic to Win Gold and Make History

On August 3rd, in the Olympic women’s singles tennis final, Chinese player Zheng Qinwen faced off against Croatia’s Petra Martic.

In the first set, Zheng Qinwen broke her opponent’s serve in the very first service game to take a 2-0 lead. However, in the third game, during her own service game, she encountered some fluctuations. Vikic used a moon ball tactic to create two break points, but Zheng Qinwen saved both. Following this, Zheng Qinwen scored directly from an outside angle serve, leading 3-0. The players then held their respective service games. In the seventh game, Zheng Qinwen was once again pushed to a break point by Vikic, but managed to hold serve thanks to good serving form, leading 5-2. In the following game, during Vikic’s service game, Zheng Qinwen broke again, winning the first set 6-2.

In the second set, Zheng Qinwen started with great momentum, breaking Vikic’s serve in the second game. However, Vikic immediately broke back in the third game. But in the fourth game, despite being up 40-0, Vikic was forced into deuce by Zheng Qinwen, who won three consecutive points. After a prolonged rally, Vikic successfully held serve, leveling the score at 2-2. Although there were fluctuations in their service games, they managed to hold serve without too much trouble. In the eighth game, Zheng Qinwen created two break points on her opponent’s serve. An enraged Vikic smashed her racket in frustration but then quickly regained composure, winning two points to reach deuce. However, she missed a smash opportunity, giving Zheng Qinwen another break point. Although Vikic managed to fend off this crisis with strong serving, Zheng Qinwen created yet another break point on her second serve, which she converted, taking a 5-3 lead. In Zheng Qinwen’s service game for the match, she successfully closed it out.

Ultimately, Zheng Qinwen won in straight sets with scores of 6-2, 6-3, securing the gold medal. This is also the first time in Chinese women’s singles tennis history that an Olympic gold has been won. Previously, Li Na had achieved a fourth-place finish.
