On June 22, the WTA 500 Berlin tournament saw its semifinals unfold. Kasatkina defeated former world number one Victoria Azarenka 6-1/6-7(3)/6-1, securing her second final appearance of the season and a maiden grass court final in her career.
In the match, Kasatkina started strongly, breaking Azarenka twice in a row and securing the first set 6-1. Azarenka raised her level in the second set, pushing it to a tiebreak where she won 7-3 to even the match. In the decisive third set, Kasatkina, capitalizing on her physical advantage, regained control and broke twice to close out the match 6-1.
After the match, when asked about her feelings on both she and her boyfriend Jannik Sinner reaching tour finals this week, Kasatkina said, “I just want to be as good as he is. I’m going to text him now, I’m so happy.”
In the other semifinal, Pegula led Gauff 7-5/6-6(3-1) when rain interrupted play, forcing the match to resume on another day. The winner will face a busy day, playing the final against Kasatkina later that same day.
On the doubles court, Hsieh Su-wei and Veronika Kudermetova defeated Kostyukova/Siniakova 6-4/6-3, setting up a championship clash with Chinese pair Wang Xinyu/Zheng Saisai.
