On July 1st local time, the 2024 Wimbledon Championships kicked off, and in the opening round of the women’s singles, YONEX-signed player and Chinese star Zheng Lin defeated Romanian competitor Begu with a dominant 6-0, 6-4 victory, securing her first Wimbledon win in three years and giving Team China a strong start to the tournament.
Zheng and Begu had previously met at the 2019 French Open, where Zheng lost in straight sets, managing only two games. In this encounter, Zheng started strongly, needing just 23 minutes to claim the first set 6-0. She maintained her form in the second set, racing to a 5-1 lead. Although Begu fought back to break Zheng’s first match point, Zheng capitalized on her second opportunity, closing out the match 6-0, 6-4 to advance to the second round.
This marks Zheng’s first main draw win at Wimbledon in three years. Last year, ranked world No. 33, she fell to world No. 1 Swiatek in the first round, ending her campaign. Zheng will face Pavlyuchenkova in the second round.
