On June 18th, local time, the second day of the WTA Berlin tournament continued, with China’s Zheng Qinwen, the tournament’s 6th seed, defeating former world number one Naomi Osaka 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. This marks Zheng’s second victory over Osaka this season and a strong start to her grass court campaign.

Right from the beginning of the match, Zheng displayed her fiery form, easily holding serve in the first set and securing a break in the fifth game before winning it 6-4. In the second set, Zheng’s first-serve percentage dropped, while Osaka improved her serving, breaking Zheng to level the match at 6-3. In the decisive third set, both players showcased high-level tennis. Zheng broke Osaka in the fourth game, capitalizing on the Japanese player’s unforced errors, and maintained her lead to seal the win on her fourth match point, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, advancing to the second round.
Zheng was dominant on her serve, hitting an impressive 23 aces and boasting an 88% first-serve win rate. This is Zheng’s second victory over Osaka this year after their encounter in Rome. In the next round, she will face Katerina Siniakova, who advanced through the qualifying rounds.
