On July 8th, Beijing time, the fourth round of the women’s singles upper bracket at the 2024 Wimbledon kicked off. China’s remaining hope, Wang Xinyu, lost 2-6, 1-6 to the tournament’s 21st seed and last year’s semi-finalist, Elina Svitolina, regrettably ending her run in the round of sixteen.
Last year at Wimbledon, Svitolina defeated four Grand Slam champions—Venus Williams, Sofia Kenin, Victoria Azarenka, and Iga Swiatek—to reach the semi-finals, matching her best performance at the tournament. In this match, Svitolina broke first in the opening set to take a 3-1 lead; in the following game, Wang Xinyu squandered a 40-0 advantage, missing three break points as Svitolina extended her lead and took the set 6-2. In the second set, although Wang Xinyu improved her baseline consistency and utilized more net approaches, Svitolina’s powerful serve and tenacious defense repeatedly bailed her out of trouble, eventually winning the set 6-1 and comfortably securing the match.
Svitolina’s quarterfinal opponent will be the tournament’s No. 4 seed, Elena Rybakina, who advanced after her opponent, Kamilla Rakhimova, retired when trailing 3-6, 0-3.
