Novak Djokovic: ‘Knee is great, I have a deep love for Wimbledon’

Serbian tennis kingpin Novak Djokovic made a dominant return to action after knee surgery, dismissing qualifier Kecmanovic in straight sets in the first round of the 2024 Wimbledon Men’s Singles. In a match lasting less than two hours, there were no issues with Djokovic’s knee, which was a positive sign for the player.

“It’s all great,” Djokovic said regarding his knee condition. “I didn’t know how it would react before this match, so I’m very pleased with the outcome. I gave my all in the last three and a half weeks to be able to compete here. I wouldn’t take this risk for any other tournament. I just love Wimbledon that much, I enjoy playing here.”

“Compared to some other players, I’ve been fortunate not to have had major injuries over the years,” Djokovic shared in his interview. “I empathize with those who struggle with injuries and can’t do what they love the most. It’s unfortunate to see them affected like that.”

One of the stars forced to withdraw from this year’s Wimbledon due to injury is hometown favorite Andy Murray. Sidelined by a back issue at the Queen’s Club grass event, Murray underwent surgery but wasn’t able to fully recover in time for the singles competition. However, he will still participate in the men’s doubles alongside his brother Jamie, marking his farewell to Wimbledon. Murray’s singles match, scheduled after Djokovic’s versus Kecmanovic, was unfortunately canceled prior to its start.

“Everyone is disappointed with Andy Murray’s withdrawal today. He has my utmost respect and has contributed so much to the sport. I just hope he can finish his career on his terms, in the way he wants to,” Djokovic expressed.
