On June 7th, the 2024 French Open entered its 13th day of play with the men’s singles semifinals. Alcaraz and Sinner engaged in a thrilling “five-set battle,” with Alcaraz ultimately prevailing with a 3-2 scoreline; Zverev overcame Rudd after a comeback from a set down. Both Alcaraz and Zverev made their first-ever appearances in the French Open men’s singles final.
Alcaraz
The intense match started at Philippe Chatrier Stadium as Alcaraz faced Sinner, who had a 5-4 head-to-head advantage. Sinner began strongly, leading 4-0 and taking the first set 6-2. In the second set, Sinner maintained his dominance but Alcaraz found his rhythm, winning five consecutive games to level the score at 6-3. The third set resembled the previous one, with Alcaraz breaking early, only for Sinner to stage a rally, ending up with a 6-3 lead.
In the fourth set, the first eleven games were uneventful until the pivotal twelfth game, where Sinner lost his serve despite being up 30-0. Alcaraz capitalized, breaking back and losing the set. Undeterred, Alcaraz dominated the deciding set, eventually prevailing with a 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Sinner, securing his first Grand Slam final appearance.
Zverev
The second men’s singles semifinal was a repeat of last year’s encounter, where Rudd had defeated Zverev 3-0. This time around, Rudd took the first set quickly, 6-2, but Zverev found a way to break through in the second, winning 6-2. In the third set, Zverev seized a key break to win 6-4. Despite Rudd’s efforts in the fourth, he couldn’t match Zverev’s momentum, and the Russian advanced with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 victory, finally breaking through to reach the final after four consecutive years in the semis.
