On June 23rd, local time, in the 2024 ATP 500 Halle final, new world number one Jannik Sinner fought through two tiebreaks to defeat fifth seed Hubert Hurkacz 7-6(8)/7-6(2), securing his first title after ascending to the top ranking. This marked his maiden grass court triumph and his 14th career singles title overall. The Italian youngster now has ATP singles championships on all three surface types.
“It means a lot. It was a tough match,” Sinner said after the match, “I knew I had to serve well, so I’m happy, I tried to play my best in the important moments. I’m very happy with this match because it’s my first title on grass, it feels great.”
Sinner expressed sympathy for his girlfriend, Karolina Pliskova, who missed out on a WTA 500 Berlin title after failing to convert five match points earlier in the day: “My girlfriend lost her match wasting six match points [erroneously stated; it was five], I feel sorry and sad for her. But she still had an amazing week.”
Looking ahead to Wimbledon, Sinner commented, “I’m really looking forward to it. Last year I made it to the semifinals, I played some good tennis. Let’s see what happens this year. I’m certainly more confident. Halle’s surface might be a bit different from here and Wimbledon, but I have one week to prepare, so hopefully, it will be a great tournament.”
Sinner’s Road to the Title:
First Round: 6-7(8)/6-3/6-2 Grécourt-Spiteri
Second Round: 6-4/6-7(4)/6-3 Molchanov
Quarterfinals: 6-2/6-7(1)/7-6(3) Struff
Semifinals: 6-4/7-6(3) Zhang Zhizhen
Final: 7-6(8)/7-6(2) Hurkacz [5]
